Brighton Art Fair

by Victoria K Frances

I’m very excited to have been selected to exhibit at Brighton Art Fair this September.

Taking place on the weekend of 19th - 22nd September 2024, this is going to be a wonderful event, attracting Brighton’s bohemian art-savvy crowd as well as those further afield from Sussex, London and beyond.

It’s especially exciting that this event is returning after a seven-year hiatus to the lovingly-restored Brighton Corn Exchange. Built in the early 1800s as a riding arena for the Prince Regent, it features the widest single-span arched ceiling in the country. The restoration team (working with lottery funding) have used beautiful materials in the project, such as welsh slate roof tiles and solid oak cladding.

At the event, I will be releasing new work, including a series of large loosely-gestural canvases. I am enjoying the exploration of the larger format (100 - 150cm), adding layers of swooping paint, sometimes roughened and thickened with mixed media. These pieces often cohere into large colour-fields of neutrals and bold colour, and I remain curious about the wild, unplanned elements of the compositions, often letting them hover in the painting’s “final” state.

I hope to see you there!
